Winter Groundwater Monitoring - Now is the time…
Advice from Arun District Council:
The winter groundwater monitoring season (October to March) is now upon us so it is time to start monitoring groundwater levels on site.
Winter groundwater monitoring provides critical evidence of how surface water drains from a site and avoids delays to proposed development.
In certain Districts, prone to shallow water tables, when considering SuDS for your development the design must include adequate winter groundwater monitoring to determine the highest winter groundwater table.
Residential developments require groundwater monitoring to be carried carried out between October and March, inclusive, as groundwater levels have been evidenced to peak anytime within these months.
An adequate unsaturated zone of 1m depth must be present beneath the base of a planned soakaway structure and the highest recorded groundwater level identified in that location.
This unsaturated zone ensures adequate soakage medium and provides protection to the underlying Controlled Waters.
